3) Offer opportunities to use aroma as a guide. Available on the market are wonderful aroma scented candles, oils, and non toxic aroma therapy kits. Natural scents work best, like slicing open an orange, lemon, or lime Allow resident to squeeze the fresh fruit. Offer an item safe to eat like pudding or Jello if no swallowing issues are involved. Jello now comes in many flavors beyond green and red! Bake fresh Bread in a bread machine, or simply make your own dough, patients can knead the dough.
4) Create rummage/sensory boxes tailored to the individual, based on their activity assessment.

Activity Workshop Sensory Ideas
Findings appropriate activities to interact with low functioning residents is a difficult task. Below I hope you find my ideas and groups helpful to you.

1) MUSIC, MUSIC,MUSIC
Use music as a language to communicate with dementia patients
Many can still sing along or hum to familiar tunes
research the type of music the individual preferred, and use that
genre to evoke movement, communication, and often a smile!
Pass out small, easy to hold instruments like hand bells with Velcro
straps
or small tambourines. Situate your group to be small, intimate,
without any distractions. Lead the group into a familiar song,
encourage those who can to sing a long, even if the words are not
correct.
The most important thing to remember is not what you accomplish,
but giving people a chance to have a satisfying moment.
2) Art
Art can be over looked with dementia patients.
Start simple, with pictures or copies of well known familiar objects.
Clay and home made molding clay offer great tactile stimulation.
Monitoring patients for safety, allow them to hold, roll, and "Play"
with the clay. Use bright colored, non toxic clay such as Crayola. The
end result is not important. Paste and pull pages from magazines,
help to arrange a collage of sorts. Allow residents to explore
different non toxic mediums. Often a few brush strokes will lead to a
self expression of sorts.
